Abbeyton Lofts - The Racing Pigeon Loft of Mr & Mrs J Savage

The BHF trophy was first raced for in 1977 and it was then that Andy had open heart surgery for a bypass operation and the records show the first recipient of this marvellous trophy was none other than the above. He could only watch from his bedroom window as his son Jim timed the famous pied cock. This bird broke the hearts of the Kilwinning fanciers as it won the pools and nominations week after week after week. After this loft had won a barrow load of 1st prizes over the following years, disaster struck Andy again and he had to receive an emergency operation in order to save his life. However the fairytale continues as that young boy of 1977, now a young man with his own family, was there to make sure the fairytale came true. In 1995 the winning velocity was 1748 and the full brother to the Fed topper was 7th Fed on 1738. The winner a yearling cock feeding a 3 day youngster.

The Racing Loft of Mr & Mrs J Savage

The Abbeyton racing loft is 26 feet long by 10 feet wide and is divided into 3 sections. Two sections have 30 perches in each and the third section has 21 breeding nest boxes. Inside at the front of the loft there is a 2 feet wide corridor, sectioned by 2 internal doors that runs the full length of the loft.

The loft is fitted with three 8 bird stall traps, mains power, dimmer lights and is kitted out for use with the Express G2 ETS clocking system from Benzing.

For the past few years we have been pairing up the old birds in the last week in Dec., but this year 2011, since we have 26 cocks and 24 hens we paired 16 of them up on the 19th Feb.11. The first round youngsters will be shifted in time for the training and before the first old bird race of the season.
