Training the Racing Pigeons for Kilwinning Homing Society

Training the pigeons normally starts two weeks before the first race and we at Abbeyton lofts have made our own small pigeon trailer for training our pigeons. The trailer is approximately 6 feet long, 4 feet wide and 5 feet high and is divided into 3 separate sections, with each section holding up to 80 pigeons.

In the first week of training we start out at 10 miles and gradually move out to 30 miles with only our own pigeons, then In the second week and before the first race, we invite the local fanciers to train with us. This mixes all the pigeons and teaches them to break away from the larger convoy when nearing the area.

Before the first race the pigeons will have had a minimum of 10 training tosses up to 30 miles. On a Sunday we do not train the pigeons as this is their day of rest when they can relax around the loft and have a bath.

During the racing season the pigeons are given a short toss of 20 miles twice a week. This keeps them fit and in prime condition for their next race.
